Maria-Louisa Gore
Director, Northern California School of Music

Northern California School of Music is a highly reputable music school located in the heart of the Silicon Valley . As the director and pianist, Ms. Maria Gore primarily teaches the very young students. As she helped her young students to excel, she realized that some of them are ready for more advanced pieces, but their progress would be hindered because they are not tall enough to reach the
piano pedal. She started to recommend the PedalMeUp piano pedal extenders to her students. “The PedalMeUp Piano pedal extenders have really helped my students,” she said. “There are many young children at the Northern California School of Music who have the desire and capability of performing demanding pieces, however, without the sustain pedal, much of the composition's dynamic is compromised. With the PedalMeUp piano pedal extender, my students are now capable of using the sustain pedal regardless of height and they use these extenders during recitals, performances, certifications, and competitions.” She added, “I keep one in my studio for private lessons.”

Lee-chin Heng

With a diploma in Solo Piano and Music Theory, Critique and Literature from Trinity College in London, Lee-chin Heng is currently a music teacher and performer in Malaysia. Born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, she is 3 feet 5 inches, and the pedal extenders she used before had a tendency to slip off, causing many problems, especially during onstage performances. During her recent performance at Carnegie Hall, she used the PedalMeUp pedal extender and provided the following comment.

Being 3 feet 5 inches tall, my “handicap,” detest as I am of the word, please pardon me for using it in this case, as I would really have been “handicapped” from playing the piano, or “limited” to a repertoire of pieces that don’t require pedaling, had it not been for the invention of the pedal extender.

Unlike the PedalMeUp pedal extender, because of the way most other conventional pedal extenders are designed, they are susceptible to slipping off when depressed too dynamically, or on a carpeted floor.

Before finding PedalMeUp, I went through the dreadful experience of having my non-PedalMeUp pedal extender slip off in the middle of a performance once. The tension of giving performances since then always bring with it the dreadful memories of that incidence, and often during a performance, I am constantly swayed from concentrating on my playing due to the need to glance down or feel the whether the pedal extender has moved or is slipping away.

Ever since I came by PedalMeUp, it not only had a tight grasp on the pedal, but also to persons with disabilities, the length of the extension can be custom-made higher or lower suiting the comfort of their heights. A miracle to many persons with disabilities growing up in the medical model of society whereby “cure” means an operation and putting rods in their bones.

As a piano instructor, I find that the PedalMeUp pedal extender is also convenient for my younger students to bring to examination and concert halls, and they can now choose a more mature array of performance pieces rather than being bound up into playing childlike pieces that do not require pedaling.
